THE EFFECT OF MICROWAVE IRRADIATION ON THE EXTRACTION YIELD AND COMPONENTS OF FENNEL’S ESSENTIAL OIL

چکیده مقالهFoeniculum vulgare Mill. (Apiaceae family) commonly known as fennel, is one of the widespread annual or perennial plants with aromatic odor. It was native to Southern Europe and Mediterranean region. Fennel was known as a medicinal plant in asian from many years ago. Hamedan is one of the largest producers fennel in Iran. Fennel cultivated in Hamadan is one of the highest quality fennel in iran. In Iran conventional methods such as steam distillation are used to extract the fennel’s essential oil. Use of microwaves to extract essential oils from plants is one of the latest methods. we use microwave radiation as a heat source. In this study, MAE was performed to obtain essential oils from fennel's seed. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) has been recognized as a technique with several advantages over other extraction methods, such as reduction of costs, extraction time, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions. Chemical composition and yield percentage of essential oils from MAE were compared with essential oils obtained by steam distillation (SD) and hydro distillation (HD). Microwave extraction compared with steam distillation (SD) and hydro distillation (HD) Less essential oil extraction .By using GC–MS system the compositions of essential oil extracted by applying three kinds of extraction methods were identified. There was no obvious difference in the quality of essential oils obtained by the HD and SD. The oxy compounds in the essential oil of microwave extraction compared to two other methods was higher. This feature enhances the quality of essential oils. More than 80 percent of the oil was extracted anethole. This combination is one of the main reasons spicy flavor fennels essential oil.
