The Effectiveness of Quality of Life Psychotherapy on the Psychological Well-Being of Mothers of Autistic Children

Abstract

Birth of a child with autism has devastating impacts on family well-being and psychological well-being. So that families of autistic children have more adaptive problems than parents of normal children. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of quality of life-based psychotherapy on the psychological well-being of mothers of autistic children.
Method: This quasi-experimental study was performed with pre-test and post-test design with control group. The statistical population consisted of all mothers with autistic children referring to Kashan Autism Center in autumn 2016. Twenty eligible individuals were selected by available sampling method and given in two experimental groups. And controls were divided. The experimental group received eight sessions (60 minutes a week) of quality of life based psychotherapy but the control group received no training.
Reef's cognitive validity and quality of life therapeutic scale were used. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance.
Results: The results of covariance analysis showed that quality of life-based psychotherapy training led to a significant increase in self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, autonomy, mastery of environment, purposeful life, and individual growth (experimental group).

Discussion and Conclusion: These children, with delayed communication and communication patterns of their limited stereotypes, exert a lot of psychological pressure on families, especially mothers.
Therefore, programs to support families and train mental health strategies are essential.
