Abstract

In this paper, we present the theoretical and experimental studies on the surface plasmon resonance effects on the magneto-optical activity of Cu/NiFe/Cu nanostructure as a function of layer thicknesses and light incident angle. An oblique deposition technique with RF magnetron sputtering was used for fabrication a Glass/Cu/NiFe/Cu multilayer with variable thicknesses of Cu and NiFe films. The angular dependence of the transverse Kerr signal of samples was measured in the Kretschmann configuration at a fixed wavelength of 632 nm. In optimum layer thicknesses and incident angle, the transverse Kerr signal can be significantly amplified compared to those of other conditions outside of optimum ranges. The transverse Kerr effect enhancement can be realized by hybridization of surface plasmon excitation and cavity resonance in plasmonic nanostructure. The results are in qualitative agreement with simulation based on the 4×4 transfer matrix formalism.
