Abstract

In recent years, trust and trust culture has attracted a large amount of attention in academic circles, especially after the appearance of the “theory of social trust” constituted by Piotr Sztompka. Actually, most of researches on social trust have studied the problem in the context of real world, but this paper, is devoted to analyze “trust culture” in virtual world- the world which is taking an important position in everyday life of people. Main goal of the present research is to answer 3 questions: Is there any cultural trust shaped in virtual space? If so, it is interesting to know that in which virtual environments or fields of interactions it has shaped more strong? And finally, what is the role of virtual space’s structure in producing “trust culture” inside cyber space? In this regard, several hypotheses were organized according to Sztompka and Henderson’s theories on “social trust”, and then they were investigated in Islamshahr city (Tehran province) at  Dec.2012  among a sample of 383 residents who usually go to coffee-nets of the city. Some of the main results of the research are:

1. Trust culture has shaped in cyber space; however it is less than the middle .

2. There is a significant relation between “cyber space’s structure” and “trust culture”. This relation is positive and at middle level.

3. Among virtual environments, trust culture was shaped more strong in “Facebook”, “Email” and “Games” respectively. Moreover, virtual sites such as music and film showed the lowest rate of trust culture.
