Abstract

It isgenerallyrecognizedthattheexistenceofunknowndis- continuities withvaryingsizes, locationsandorientationsleadtoa significant levelofuncertaintyinthephysicalbehavioroffrac- tured rockmasses.Uncertaintyandvariabilityarecausedbythe nature andunpredictablebehaviorsofthefracturedrockmassas an inherentlyheterogeneousgeologicalmaterial. Therefore, the variabilityofthefracturedrockpropertiesisanimportantand inescapable issue, whichremainsoneofthemostdifficult chal- lenges. Inthisregard,stochasticanalysisofstrengthanddeform- ability parametersoffracturedrocksisakeyissueofsitechar- acterizationofrockengineeringprojects, whichmayprovidemore reliable estimationofvariabilityofstrengthanddeformabilityof the fracturedrockmassesconcerned, asameansofquantitative representationofuncertainty/variabilityofthehostrockmass concerned, andthereforeenhancingdesignofsurfaceandsub- surface structuresinandonrockmasses, andreliableeconomic evaluation.
