Abstract

summary Background: Footwear characteristics influence stability in standing, walking, and the risk of falling. Rocker shoes are used by both normal individuals and those with various musculoskeletal disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of rocker shoes on the dynamic stability of subjects during normal walking. Methods: A group of normal subjects were recruited for this study. A motion analysis system with 7 highspeed cameras was used to record body motions while walking. The excursion of the center of mass (COM) in mediolateral, anteroposterior, and vertical directions normalized to the base of support, stride length, and body height were used to evaluate dynamic stability while walking with and without rocker shoes. Additionally, spatiotemporal gait parameters were evaluated while walking with rocker shoes and without shoes. Results: According to the results of this study, the mean values of stride length while walking with and without shoes were 1.08 ± 0.13 and 1.01 ± 0.13 meters, respectively (p-value of the difference was 0.07). The maximum excursion of COM movement in the mediolateral direction was 68.2 ± 18 and 57.4 ± 13.84% of the base of support in walking without and with shoes, respectively (pvalue of the difference was 0.03). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the use of rocker shoes did not decrease dynamic stability or increase the risk of falling. Therefore, it is recommended for use by subjects f
