An analysis of the performance of urban public transportation from the perspective of citizens (Case study: Mahmoudiyah city, Iraq)
Abstract:
Today, public transportation is discussed and studied as one of the superior characteristics of 21st century cities. Studies in the field of various public transportation systems and the emergence of new public transportation systems for modern cities around the world have made great progress. The city of Mahmoudiyah, Iraq, as one of the important cities in Iraq, has many problems in the field of public transportation, and given the approach that Iraq, as a rapidly developing country, must equip its urban infrastructure, the city of Mahmoudiyah must also take great steps in the field of public transportation. The aim of this research is to measure and evaluate the various dimensions of public transportation in the city of Mahmoudiyah. Dimensions such as infrastructure dimensions, social dimensions, and economic dimensions are carefully examined. For this purpose, a descriptive-analytical method was used and a researcher-made questionnaire containing more than 50 information items was completed from a sample of 400 people with conventional characteristics. The research questions were to examine the various infrastructural, social, and economic dimensions of the quality and quantity of public transportation in the city, and hypotheses were presented in response to the questions. The results of the study show that the performance status of the infrastructural, economic, social, quality of stations and means of intra-city public transportation in Mahmoudiyah city is below average with averages of (1.95), (2.14), (2.140), (1.86), (1.87), respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the performance of intra-city public transportation in Mahmoudiyah city, Baghdad, is not in a good condition due to the influence of managerial, technical, social, financial and cultural factors.
