An analysis of indicators of good urban governance in the city of Muqdadiyah, Iraq

Abstract:

Today, good urban governance is recognized as the driving force behind sustainable urban development, which provides a platform for improving the quality of life of citizens by ensuring public participation, transparency, and accountability. The realization of this concept guarantees fair management of resources, efficient provision of services, and ultimately achieving a prosperous and humane city.In this regard, the city of Moqdadiyeh with a population of 280 thousand people is one of the urban areas in Diyala province, which, despite its capacities for development in various dimensions, seems to be facing numerous challenges in various dimensions of sustainability under the influence of the traditional structure of the urban management system and the lack of adaptation of this structure to new developments in the field of urban management, including good urban governance. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to measure and evaluate the index of good urban governance in the city of Moqdadiyeh , Iraq. In terms of methodology, the present research is an applied research and in terms of the method of conduct, it is of a descriptive-analytical type. The statistical population of the study is the citizens of the city of Moqdadiyeh , Iraq, and the sample size is estimated to be 384 people using the Cochran formula. The sampling method is simple random sampling. The research data analysis was carried out in two ways, namely descriptive and inferential. SPSS software is used to analyze the data and Geographic Information System (GIS) software is used to draw maps.The findings of the study show that the status of good urban governance indicators including participation, justice, efficiency and effectiveness, legality, consensus-based, responsibility and accountability in the city of Moqdadiyeh , Iraq is below average with an average of (2.18), (2.12), (2.14), (2.22), (2.28), (2.22) and (2.47), respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that all indicators of good urban governance in the city of Moqdadiyeh , Iraq are in an unfavorable and below average state, and these results indicate that the urban management system is facing fundamental challenges in various dimensions. Therefore, it can be said that urban governance in Moqdadiyeh is not efficient and requires a fundamental review of the city's governance mechanisms.
