Abstract
Background: The use of medicinal plants instead of synthetic drugs has increased in recent years due to the low side effects and the variety of effective compounds of these plants. The aim of this study is to investigate the analgesic effect of methanolic extract of Hyoscyamus senecionis leaves administered to male mice by formalin test in two acute and severe phases. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was performed on 36 male rats (27 ± 3 gr), which included: 6 groups of control, The recipient groups of 200, 100 and 50 mg/Kg methanolic extracts and positive control groups of morphine 10 mg / kg and diclofenac 50 mg/kg per kg body weight, injected intraperitoneally. After 30 minutes Formalin was injected subcutaneously in the back of the left leg for pain induction. Results: Injection of methanolic extract of H. senecionis leaves at dosages of 200, 100 and 50 mg/Kg reduced the pain behaviors in the first and second phases of formalin test. Conclusion: The results of this study show that methanolic extract of H. senecionis leaves has anti-peritoneal properties and can be more investigated to replace with chemical analgesics.
