Abstract
The archaeological site of Vigol, known as one the largest historical-Islamic sites of northern Isfahan, has an area of 450 hectares. Not only has this site some immovable structures such as architectural features, but also a considerable amount of potsherds. Although the authors of the following article are aware of the site’s importance during the Islamic early and Middle Ages, they mainly focus on the Sassanid pottery of Vigol. Thus, we firstly raise this question: What is the typological and classification status of Sassanid pottery in Vigol, and to what extent can its forms be compared with other well-known Sassanid archaeological sites? How diverse are the decorations used to ornament these potsherds? To examine and answer the desired questions, we selected 98 pieces that were collected during the systematic survey of 2006. The method of this paper is descriptive-analytical. Therefore, we briefly introduce the site itself, then move to the second part which is typology, classification, and chronology of the evidence. The results show that the mentioned evidence only includes simple unglazed potteries. Based on the form, the potteries include bowl, bin, Jar, vat and pot, flat shapes such as lids and plates, spout and handle vessels. These potteries can be compared with some Sassanid sites located in the west, north-east, south, and the central plateau of Iran. Considering decorations the potteries are decorated with different methods such as incised, applied, excised, comb, and combined. However, what is remarkable in the decorations of the Vigol’s Sassanid potteries are the variety of stamped designs, which indicates the prevalence of a local tradition in creating such objects.
