چکیده مقاله

The study in detail of such environments would permit to determine not only the microbial diversity but also the gene pools and potential use of this information for biotechnological applications. Urmia Salt Lake in the northwestern of Iran is the second saltiest lake in the world and resembles the Great Salt Lake in the western USA. High viable counts (1.4×102 – 6.6 × 106) were obtained in culture media. Three hundred bacterial isolates were obtained from soil, salt, water and sediment samples collected from the east and western of the lake. Most of the isolates (55.6%) were able to grow in the medium without salt thus indicating the halotolerant characteristic of these isolates while the rest isolates were classified as moderate halophiles. Results showed that isolates represented 39 species, belonging to 18genera and 9 families pertaining to three phyla (Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria).
