چکیده مقاله

Proveskia abrotanoides Kar. is a wild growing plant belong to Lamiaceae family and has been used in traditional Iranian herbal medicine. Current study has been designed to measure antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effects of methanolic extract of P. abrotanoides.
MethodsMETHODS:
Aerial parts of P.abrotanoides were collected from Ghohrood, Kashan. Powdered air-dried plant material was extracted with methanol. Extract was tested for its antioxidant activities using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The antimicrobial activity of methanol extract was evaluated against a set of 10 microorganisms and its potency was assessed quantitatively by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values and determination of minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC).

ResultRESULTS:
In the DPPH test, IC50 value was 47.97 μg/ml, indicating an antioxidant potency of about 17% of that of butylated hydroxytoluene (IC50 = 8.23 μg/ml) for this extract. For antimicrobial activity of P.abrotanoides, the MIC and MBC values in μg/ml for 10 strains of Microorganisms are as follows: Salmonella paratyphi-A serotype: MIC=62.5, MBC=500; Pseudomonas aeruginosa: MIC≤31.2, MBC=62.5; Bacillus subtilis: MIC=62.5, MBC=250; Staphylococcus epidermidis: MIC= 62.5, MBC= 250; Escherichia coli: MIC=62.5, MBC=250; Staphylococcus aureus: MIC=62.5, MBC=500; Klebsiella pneumonia: MIC=62.5, MBC=125; Shigella dysenteriae: MIC=62.5, MBC=250; Proteus vulgaris: MIC=62.5, MBC=62.5; Candida albicans: MIC=62.5, MBC=500 .
ConclusionCONCLUSION:
The DPPH System model shows well that natural anti-oxidants can compete with synthetic antioxidants and can be replaced with these antioxidants in the food industry. Also, according to the results, we have seen a moderate and good antimicrobial activity of this plant.
