چکیده مقاله

Salvia reuterana Boiss. is a medicinal herb of the lamiaceae family with various therapeutic usages and is mostly distributed in the central highlands of Iran. The aim of this study was to evaluate of the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extract of Salvia reuterana.
MethodsMETHODS:
Aerial organs of S. reuterana were collected, from the Ghohrood, Kashan area. The dried and powdered plant material was extracted with methanol. Radical-scavenging activity (RSA) of the plant extracts was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay method. Antimicrobial activity of plant extract was studied on 10 microorganism for their minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) values and determination of minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC).
ResultRESULTS:
In the DPPH assay, IC50 value was 211.96 μg/ml, indicating an antioxidant potency of about 4% of that of butylated hydroxytoluene (IC50 = 8.23 μg/ml) for this extract. For antimicrobial activity of Salvia reuterana, the MIC and MBC values in μg/ml for 10 strains of Microorganisms are as follows: Salmonella paratyphi-A serotype: MIC=62.5, MBC=500; Pseudomonas aeruginosa: MIC=62.5, MBC=125; Bacillus subtilis: MIC=31.2, MBC=62.5; Staphylococcus epidermidis: MIC= 62.5, MBC= 250; Escherichia coli: MIC=62.5, MBC=250; Staphylococcus aureus: MIC=62.5, MBC=500; Klebsiella pneumonia: MIC=62.5, MBC =500; Shigella dysenteriae: MIC=62.5, MBC=250; Proteus vulgaris: MIC=62.5, MBC=62.5; Candida albicans: MIC=62.5, MBC =500 .
ConclusionsCONCLUSION:

Herbal extracts generally display remarkable biological activities such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties which are useful for preserving foods from decay. The results of this study indicate that the extract of this plant has a relatively good antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effect.
