Abstract Different morphologies of tin(IV) oxide nanostructures were synthesized via a simple chemical reaction in solvent of water. The effect of various precipitation agents (alkaline) on the particle size of the products was investigated. Photo-catalytic property of SnO2 in degradation four different dyes as organic pollutants in water was examined under ultraviolet–visible irradiation. Nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction pattern, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infra-red, photoluminescence, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. For preparation of nanocomposite, tin dioxide was added to poly vinyl alcohol and results show that SnO2 nanostructures can improve thermal stability and flame retardant property of the polymeric matrix.
