This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parenting practices and shyness in
preschoolers. To this end, a descriptive

correlational method was adopted. The
study population
consisted of all parents who had their children registered in day care centers in District 2 and 5 o
f
Tehran Municipality in 2015. From the study population, a sample of 150 female and male
preschoolers was selected using convenience sampl
ing method. The research instrument
consisted of parenting style questionnaire and Cheek
-
Buss scale of shyness. The data were
analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple
-
linear regression. The results
indicate that there is a significant po
sitive relationship between the permissive parenting style
and shyness in children. In other words, the shyness tends to be higher in strict authoritative
parenting style. Also, there is a significant negative correlation between authoritarian parenting
st
yle and shyness, meaning that authoritative parenting style is more likely to mitigate shyness in
preschoolers
