Aesthetics in Islamic architecture

Abstract

Beauty is one of those things which has not a particular definition like place or situation. It has various definitions based on the individual’s worldview and attitude toward universe. Islamic philosophers and intellectuals have different opinions the definition of beauty. This topic has always been examined among Muslims with due consideration to the other related elements of theoretical and scientific doctrines. The real beauty in the opinion of Islam is a concrete truth which is true about all creatures. Therefore, we can find beauty during philosophical, mystical and psychological discussions. Accompanying with Islamic traditions, Iranian architecture has always tried to combine all of its aspects to achieve unity. Unity is a rooted principal in Iranian architecture which its lack can be felt in the current architectures. If the architecture represents the feeling of unity in its body and concept, it will be able to satisfy a part of people’s spirit related to the building and also attain a suitable aesthetic position. The authors aim to achieve by using library research and analytical-descriptive method, to take an effective step on examining the different meanings and concepts of beauty from Islamic perspective using Koran verses and examining the thoughts of eminent and the meanings of words as citation and interpretation. They also aim at attaining Islamic architectural aesthetics factors like esteem, unity, beauty and value, formal and symbolic beauty
