چکیده مقاله

Background: The various species of salvia L. genuse are known in folk medicine for therapeutic purpose in Iran. In the present study antimicrobial activity of methanol exteract from aerial parts of salvia limbata collected in kashan, and then was evaluated against some of standard bacteria and yeast (candida albicans). Materials and Methods: Antibacterial activity of methanol extract of Salvia limbata plant (MIC and MBC) was tested against ten bacteria species and yeast such as; Pseudomonas aeruginos, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella paratyphi-A serotype and candida albicans using the agar diffusion technique and micro-well dilution assay method. Results: In our study the methanol extract of Salvia limbata showed antimicrobial activity against the gram positive bacteria B. subtilis and S. aureus. The MIC and MBC results showed that methanol extract of Salvia limbata was more active against B. subtilis with MIC value 125μg/ml and MBC value 500μg/ml as compaired with S. aureus with MIC value 250 μg/ml and MBC >2000μg/ml. In this study the methanol extract of Salvia limbata had not antimicrobial activity against the other tested microorganisms. Conclusion: The results showed that methanol extracts of Salvia limbata has antibacterial effect against B. subtilis and S.aureus. Therefore this extract could be Suitable for using in traditional herbal medicines. More experiments need to understand pharmacological activities of these salvia species for therapeutic purpose.
