چکیده مقاله
Background:Today in modern world medicinal plants are highly effective in treatment of various diseases. Hyoscyamus senecionis belonging to solanaceae family is well known for its alkaloid as secondary metabolites. Hyoscyamine and scopolamine as two major components of this species are medicinally important because of possessing anticholinergic activities and some effects on central nervous system. Material and methods: H. senecionis was collected from kashan. Air-dried grounded Leave and fruit samples were extracted separately by soxhlet apparatus for 8 hours using methanol. Determination of antimicrobial activities of dried H. senecionis extracts were accomplished by agar disk diffusion method. We studied 8 strain bacteria and 2 fungi and 1 yeast. The extracts were studied for their minimal inhibition (MIC) and then minimal bactericide concentration (MBC) was determined for sensitive strains. Gentamicin and Rifampin were examined as positive controls and DMSO as negative control. Each assay was repeated twice. Results: The methanol extract from leaves and fruit of Hyoscyamus senecionis showed activity against Staphylococcus epidermis and Bacillus subtilis. The samples showed moderate antimicrobial activities with inhibition zone diameter from 10 to 11 mm for leaves and 9 to 10 mm for stems. The fruit extracts exhibited activity against the tested microorganisms with MIC and MBC of 62.5 μg/ml and 500 μg/ml respectively. The range of MIC value for leaves was 62.5-250 μg/ml and MBC was 2000 μg/ml. Antifungal activity did not observe for studied extracts. Conclusion: Hyoscyamus species are important as a narcotic drug historically, while there are a long number of non-alkaloid constituents in this genus that possessing various pharmacological activities for example antimicrobial activity.
