چکیده مقاله

Background: Nowadays medicines which derived from plants are in the spotlight. Hyoscyamus senecionis belongs to solanaceae family and its antispasmodic, analgesic, antipyretic and anticholinergic effects have been proven. The aim of this research is studying its antibacterial effects. Materials and methods: Plant samples collected from Kashan region. The stems and seeds dried in suitable condition and extraction was done using soxhlet and high-grade methanol. Antimicrobial effects of extraction surveyed on 8 bacteria strain and 1 yeast by agar disk diffusion method. Gentamicin and Rifampin were examined as positive controls and DMSO as negative control. Each assay was repeated twice. Results: The antibacterial effect of seeds methanolic extraction on studied gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermis) was proved. The stem extract did not demonstrate antibacterial effect. The seeds extract showed zone of inhibition against B. Subtilis (9 mm), S. aureus (13 mm) and S. epidermis (11 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 62.5-500 and the minimum bactericide (MBC) was 500-2000< μg/ml. Conclusion: Considering the fact that most studies have focused on the effect of the alkaloid in this species, the results of this study determined the antibacterial effects of this plant especially in seeds.
